On the morning of November 4, 2025, 25-year-old Haidar Anis Khairbek was killed in the village of Ain Shaqaq, in the countryside of Latakia, western Syria, when a group of armed men in a Hyundai Santa Fe opened fire on him and his friend as they were passing by on a motorcycle.
The car had intercepted the motorcycle’s path in the Jableh countryside, where the gunmen robbed the two young men of their belongings and insulted them. When the victim tried to object, they shot him dead instantly, while his friend was injured as he attempted to help him.
The victim, Haidar Anis Khairbek, was a young agricultural engineer from the Alawite community and had recently graduated from the Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. The incident occurred amid a broader context of instability and rising sectarian violence and kidnappings targeting minorities in Syria, under the control of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham in the region.
