The bombing occurred on 26 December 2025 inside the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi al-Dhahab neighborhood of the city of Homs in western Syria, while worshippers were present inside the mosque. The explosion resulted in the killing and injury of dozens of civilians, including children, in addition to causing extensive material damage to the interior structure of the site.

Circulated video footage showed the remains of destruction inside the mosque following the bombing. While the interim authorities did not announce clear details regarding the circumstances of the incident or the identity of the perpetrators, a group calling itself “Saraya Ansar al-Sunna” claimed responsibility for the bombing that targeted the mosque located in a neighborhood with an Alawite majority.

Following the bombing, hospitals in the city of Homs issued urgent appeals for blood donations, and a number of medical facilities were converted into centers to receive donors, amid the severe pressure resulting from the number of wounded and the serious injury cases.

This incident comes in the context of escalating violations against civilians from the Alawite community in western Syria, including incidents of killing, abduction, and physical assaults. It also coincides with the spread of hate speech and sectarian incitement on social media, in addition to public takfiri rhetoric on some platforms, without the recording of clear measures to hold those involved accountable or to curb these practices.

These facts reflect the continuation of violence against civilians, particularly religious and sectarian minorities, amid the absence of transparent official information and the continued impunity in areas under the control of the interim authorities.
