Documentation of the Killing of Aref Amin Zalkh in Homs Amid Escalating Sectarian-Based Violations in Syria

Reliable sources have reported that the young man, Aref Amin Zalkh, was found shot dead on the evening of Sunday, April 5, 2026, inside his vehicle in the Karam Shamsham neighborhood of Homs. He was subjected to direct gunfire, resulting in his immediate death. This incident occurs within a context of escalating gross human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings targeting civilians on religious and sectarian grounds across various regions in Syria.

The victim hailed from the village of Al-Mazhariyah in the southeastern countryside of Homs and was a member of the Alawite community.

As of the drafting of this report, no confirmed information is available regarding the perpetrators or the underlying motives, amid a persistent state of security breakdown and the absence of transparent investigations.

This incident follows a series of similar occurrences indicating a rise in violence against civilians:

On April 4, 2026, the home of Basel Mahmoud al-Mohammad (known as al-Akkari) in the village of Birin, western Hama countryside, was subjected to an armed attack by individuals believed to be from a neighboring village. The attackers threw a hand grenade into the house; as the victim attempted to move it away from his family, it detonated in his hand, after which he was shot. He succumbed to his injuries on the morning of April 6, 2026. The victim belonged to the Alawite community.

On April 2, 2026, Mohammed Hafiz al-Ali and Youssef Mohammed al-Ali, both Alawite civilians, were killed by an armed group while working on agricultural land north of Al-Bayyad village (Umm al-Tuyour municipality) in the western Hama countryside. There were no indications of their participation in any combat activities.

On April 1, 2026, Fater Ratib Hamdan, from the village of Al-Hadatha in the Homs countryside, died from injuries sustained through torture during a detention period lasting approximately 14 months. He passed away days after being released in critical medical condition. The victim was from the Alawite community.

On March 29, 2026, the body of Hossam Ahmed Baddour (41 years old) was discovered in the Wadi al-Sayeh neighborhood of Homs with a gunshot wound to the head. This followed his disappearance one day after leaving for work. The victim was from the Alawite community.

In a separate incident on March 29, 2026, Fadi Halloun, a Christian civilian, was critically injured during an armed robbery targeting a money transfer office in the city of Safita, Tartus countryside.

Collectively, these incidents indicate an alarming escalation in the frequency of gross human rights violations in Syria, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and armed assaults targeting civilians.

Furthermore, these events reflect a growing pattern of targeting individuals based on religious and sectarian identity, raising serious concerns regarding the expansion of systematic violence against minorities.

The continuation of these violations, in the absence of effective legal accountability, reinforces a climate of impunity. This underscores the urgent need for independent and transparent investigations, the holding of perpetrators accountable, and the ensuring of civilian protection in accordance with the provisions of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law.
