On Friday, April 10, 2026, the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo, northern Syria, witnessed a controversial incident involving the removal of the Kurdish national flag by a group of individuals. This was followed by the arrest of four Kurdish youths from the neighborhood, a move that has sparked widespread resentment among local residents.
According to local sources, a group proceeded to lower the Kurdish flag in the Al-Jabanat area in the eastern sector of Sheikh Maqsoud—a predominantly Kurdish neighborhood—in full view of the Internal Security Forces affiliated with the Ministry of Interior of the Syrian Interim Government, who did not intervene to prevent the incident.
In the aftermath, several neighborhood youths attempted to re-hoist the flag as an expression of their rejection of the act. However, the Internal Security Forces arrested four of them, identified as:
Bashar Hussein
Hussein Hussein
Hamza Suleiman
Samir Yusuf
Reports further indicate that a fifth youth succeeded in re-hoisting the flag before fleeing under pursuit. Security forces subsequently detained his mother, an action regarded by residents as an unjustified escalation and a violation of civilian rights.
Sources noted that the neighborhood is currently experiencing a state of security alert amid rising public anger. Residents characterized the incident as discriminatory, targeting Kurdish national identity, particularly as the incident occurred at the neighborhood’s entrance.
This occurrence falls within a broader context of tensions and violations affecting the Kurdish population in northern Syria. On March 21, 2026, coinciding with Nowruz celebrations, similar incidents were recorded in Aleppo city, its northern countryside, and Afrin. These included physical assaults, the burning of Kurdish flags, and the prevention of celebrations, alongside an escalation in nationalist-driven incitement.
Furthermore, this incident is linked to recent territorial shifts in Aleppo. The Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods came under the control of the Interim Authority forces following a military operation that commenced on January 6, 2026, and concluded with the seizure of both neighborhoods on January 10, 2026, following confrontations with local Kurdish forces.
The “Rights Monitor” platform had previously documented during those military operations gross violations of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law targeting Kurdish civilians in Sheikh Maqsoud, supported by visual evidence published at the time.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the protection of cultural and national rights, as well as the risks of arbitrary detention and punitive measures against relatives of wanted individuals, all of which contravene international human rights standards.
