Abduction of an Alawite Man in Al-Muntar Village, Tartus Countryside: Armed Men Take a Civilian to an Unknown Location in the Governorate’s Rural Area

The countryside of Tartus Governorate in western Syria witnessed an abduction incident targeting a civilian man from the Alawite sect, in a development that falls within escalating concerns regarding the safety of civilians in the Syrian coastal region.

According to the available information, masked armed men abducted Mr. Ali Ismail Ismail from his commercial shop located in Al-Muntar village in the countryside of Tartus Governorate on the afternoon of 28 February 2026.

According to local testimonies, a silver Kia Sportage vehicle stopped in front of the shop. A masked individual exited the vehicle and asked the victim to speak with the “Sheikh” who was inside the car. When he approached, he was forcibly placed inside the vehicle, which then departed to an unknown destination.

This incident occurs within the context of an ongoing pattern of sectarian-motivated targeting operations in the Syrian coastal region, raising serious concerns regarding the protection of civilians, particularly those belonging to religious and sectarian minorities, including members of the Alawite community.

The continuation of such violations, in the absence of publicly announced official investigation results or clear judicial accountability, reflects a state of human rights concern regarding the spread of impunity and the failure to provide effective guarantees for the protection of the civilian population.

International human rights standards and international humanitarian law require the competent authorities to initiate an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the abduction, disclose the fate of the victim and ensure his safety, and hold those responsible accountable, regardless of their status.

There is also an urgent need to adopt practical measures to halt violations of a sectarian nature, strengthen the protection of civilians without discrimination, and ensure that such crimes are not repeated.
