The family of Kurdish citizen “Ramadan Baba,” detained in Tel Aran, is being extorted for $10,000 to secure his release

On October 9, 2025, 23-year-old Kurdish man Ramadan Khaled Baba — the sole breadwinner of his family and a coffee vendor — was arrested in the Kurdish town of Tel Aran, located in the southern countryside of Aleppo, Syria.

The arrest was carried out by forces affiliated with the “Al-Amshat” faction, a group loyal to Turkey and linked to the General Security apparatus of the Syrian Interim Government (Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham), under the pretext that he had been listening to Kurdish songs.

More than 24 days after his arrest, the victim’s fate remains unknown, with no official information about his location or the circumstances of his detention. Following the arrest, a systematic extortion campaign began, as the detaining members demanded a ransom of $10,000 USD from the victim’s family in exchange for his release.

His mother, who attempted suicide and was subsequently hospitalized, also received direct threats from foreign phone numbers, demanding sums ranging between $7,000 and $10,000 USD to secure his freedom.

Information obtained and previously documented cases of similar violations indicate that this incident is part of a systematic campaign carried out by forces affiliated with the Syrian Interim Authority, targeting Kurdish residents of Tel Aran and Tel Hasel. The campaign appears to be racially motivated, aiming to terrorize and forcibly displace the local Kurdish population.
