The killing of Mr. Ayman Ali Al-Jurdi, a civilian of the Alawite faith who worked as a taxi driver, two days after his abduction, constitutes a new chapter in the series of gross violations targeting civilians in Syria, particularly members of religious minorities.
On Monday, Al-Jurdi was abducted in the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood of Homs, western Syria, before his body was discovered on March 18, 2026.
This incident occurs within the context of an escalating pattern of violence targeting civilians on religious and ethnic grounds, reflecting alarming indicators of the targeting of minorities in various regions across the country.
In a related context, Ibrahim Hassan al-Khatib, a young man belonging to the Shiite community, was killed on March 16, 2026, after being shot on the Aleppo-Azaz road in northern Syria. This incident highlights the surge in attacks targeting civilians outside areas of direct conflict.
On the same day, the body of Ali Ramez al-Muhammad, a member of the Alawite community, was found murdered inside his home in Homs under circumstances that remain ambiguous, with full details yet to be disclosed.
Furthermore, Hussein Rasim al-Rajjou, also of the Alawite faith, was killed on March 13, 2026, in the Al-Muhajirin – Dahiyat al-Basel neighborhood of Homs, following an assault with a sharp object to the neck, resulting in his immediate death.
Regarding the targeting of the Ismaili community, the body of Ismail Mustafa Safar was found on March 14, 2026, in the Homs countryside after he was lured away from the city of Salamiyah in the Hama countryside.
Additionally, an abduction was recorded involving Joseph Milad Zeno, a young Ismaili man from Salamiyah, on March 12, 2026. Surveillance footage showed masked gunmen in military uniforms abducting him in the Eastern Dummar area near the capital, Damascus.
Collectively, these incidents indicate a disturbing escalation in the frequency of violations targeting civilians based on religious affiliation. Amid a prevailing absence of accountability and a lack of protection for victims, there is an urgent need for action by relevant authorities to ensure the protection of civilians, halt these violations, and hold those responsible to account.
