Killing of Maher Kazkaz in an Armed Attack in the City of Hama and a Statement Attributed to ISIS Claiming Responsibility for the Operation

On 27 November 2025, the citizen Maher Kazkaz, a veterinarian belonging to the Sunni sect, was killed in the al-Tattan neighborhood in the city of Hama, western Syria.

Armed men opened fire on Dr. Maher Kazkaz, a former candidate for the Syrian People’s Assembly, and the engineer Safouh Za‘rour in the al-Tattan neighborhood, which resulted in the killing of Kazkaz and the injury of Za‘rour in the neck, according to what was shown in a video monitored by “Rights Monitor.”

Accounts loyal to the interim authority “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham” published on the X platform a statement by the Islamic State organization “ISIS” claiming responsibility for the killing of the citizen Maher Kazkaz and the young man Hudhayfa Tuti, who is from the Shiite sect and was killed in an armed attack on 27 November 2025 while he was working at his stall selling fava beans, which he had built from stones on the outskirts of the village of al-Mazra‘a in the Homs countryside in central Syria.

“Rights Monitor” documented on social media an incitement campaign calling for the killing of the victim, Maher Kazkaz, prior to the attack against him. These campaigns were led by supporters of the interim authority, who target their opponents through hate speech that fuels violence in the country.
