A woman from the Murshidi sect was injured as a result of the explosion of one of four grenades allegedly thrown by unidentified armed individuals among civilians in the Karam al-Zeitoun neighborhood of the city of Homs in central Syria, on the evening of Tuesday, 19 May 2026, in an incident that falls within a troubling escalation of sectarian-motivated violence and violations in the governorate.
According to statements from local sources and eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Street 26 in the Karam al-Zeitoun neighborhood, where unidentified individuals reportedly threw four grenades among passersby. One of the grenades exploded immediately, resulting in injuries to a woman in her fifties, a resident of the neighborhood belonging to the Murshidi sect, who sustained wounds to her leg, while the remaining three grenades failed to detonate.
The sources further reported that the grenade attack occurred following tensions in the neighborhood after one resident confronted three young men riding motorcycles in an attempt to prevent one of them from harassing a young woman and a young man from the area and from directing obscene and abusive remarks toward the residents of the neighborhood.
The sources stated that security patrols that arrived at the scene to contain the altercation arrested the man who had attempted to prevent the youths from harassing local residents.
This incident comes amid an escalation of acts of violence and targeting affecting civilians on religious or sectarian grounds in Homs Governorate during the recent period.
On 13 May 2026, citizen Umm Rami al-Zaroufi, who belonged to the Alawite sect, died from severe injuries she had sustained on 4 May 2026 following an armed attack that targeted her and members of her family inside a commercial shop in the Al-Sabil neighborhood of Homs city.
These temporally proximate incidents reflect a troubling escalation in the pace of violations and sectarian-motivated violence in Homs Governorate, coinciding with weak accountability measures and the continuing state of security instability, raising increasing concerns regarding threats to civil peace and the safety of the civilian population.
The escalation of hate speech and incitement through digital platforms is also contributing to the aggravation of societal tensions and increasing the likelihood of retaliatory violence, amid the absence of effective measures to curb such discourse or hold those responsible accountable.
The continued occurrence of these violations without effective accountability constitutes a direct threat to human rights and the rule of law, necessitating the adoption of urgent measures to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent further escalation of sectarian violence in the region.
