The Death of Detainee Ghassan Mohsen Al-Ali Following Over a Year of Enforced Disappearance and Torture in Syrian Detention Centers

The family of detainee Ghassan Mohsen Al-Ali, a native of Al-Hayseh village in the western countryside of Homs, has received news of his death inside a Syrian detention center. This follows his subjected enforced disappearance and torture for a period exceeding one year and four months, according to local sources and human rights activists.

The victim belonged to the Alawite community and was arrested from his home on January 21, 2025, after undergoing what is known as a “reconciliation” (settlement) process. He was subsequently transferred between several detention centers, including the Homs Central Prison and “Hisyah” Prison, to which he was transferred approximately ten days prior to his death.

According to reports from activists regarding a phone call between the provisional authorities and the victim’s family, the family was informed that the cause of death was a “stroke” while he was at the University Hospital. However, according to frequent human rights documentation, this narrative is considered one of the pretexts often used to justify the deaths of detainees subjected to torture and ill-treatment within places of detention.

The family received the victim’s body on May 14, 2026, amid the continued absence of any independent investigation or transparent information regarding the circumstances of his death. His name joins thousands of victims of enforced disappearance and detainees who have perished inside Syrian prisons amid ongoing accusations of gross human rights violations and the obfuscation of the fate of detainees.
