Video Testimony Documents the Rape of the Child “Shams” During the July 2025 Attack on Suwayda

In a grave development documenting a facet of gross violations against civilians, the Suwayda Documentation and Media Center has released a video testimony documenting the crime of rape committed against the child “Shams” (a pseudonym used to ensure the victim’s safety and maintain confidentiality). This testimony serves as field evidence of the commission of serious violations during the attack witnessed in the Suwayda Governorate in mid-July 2025.

According to the testimony, the crime was perpetrated by elements affiliated with the Damascus authorities against a child, within the context of military operations that targeted the region during that period. This incident falls under a broader pattern of violations against civilians, raising serious concerns regarding the absence of accountability and the persistence of impunity.

The Center emphasized that the publication of this testimony is part of its ongoing efforts to document violations against civilians, stressing the importance of viva voce (live) testimonies in uncovering the truth, preserving evidence, and supporting the pathways of justice and accountability. It further noted that documenting such crimes represents a fundamental step toward seeking redress for victims and preventing the recurrence of violations.

This incident occurs within the context of escalating violence in the Suwayda Governorate, which witnessed a dangerous wave of violations in July 2025, including killings, kidnappings, and various assaults against civilians. These developments were linked to an attack launched by the forces of the “Temporary Authorities” affiliated with Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, leading to a deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation in the region.

This documentation highlights the urgent need to conduct independent and transparent investigations into these violations, ensure the protection of victims and witnesses, and work toward holding those responsible accountable in accordance with International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law.
