The young man Alaa al-Din Adnan Al-Amin has died after months of enforced disappearance following his arrest by Asayish forces in the city of Qamishli in northern Syria, in an incident that has sparked widespread shock and anger among residents, alongside calls for an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible.
According to local sources, Alaa al-Din Adnan Al-Amin, a Syrian–Swedish citizen and a native of the city of Qamishli, had returned to his hometown several months before the incident after years of living abroad, in order to complete his wedding ceremonies and celebrate the occasion with his family members and friends.
However, this brief period—during which he had hoped to begin a new chapter in his life—turned into a tragedy. Information indicates that he was arrested by Asayish forces approximately one month after his wedding, without any explanation of the reasons for his arrest or the filing of any official charges against him.
From the moment of his arrest, all news of him ceased completely, and he was subjected to nearly six months of enforced disappearance. During this period, his family did not receive any official information regarding his place of detention or his health or legal status, despite their repeated attempts to learn his fate.
On the morning of 8 March 2026, the family received a phone call requesting that they come to collect his body, without any explanation regarding the circumstances of his death.
According to statements from the family, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition when it was handed over, and clear signs of torture were observed, including bruises on various parts of the body, a broken nose, and injuries to the head. These indications, according to preliminary assessments, suggest that the victim may have been subjected to torture prior to his death, and it is likely that he died approximately two months before the body was returned to the family.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and resentment among residents of Qamishli, with activists and local community figures calling for the full disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the death and the opening of a transparent and independent investigation to identify those responsible for the arrest, the enforced disappearance, and what the victim was subjected to during his detention.
According to observers, this case underscores the importance of ensuring respect for human rights and legal standards in places of detention, particularly with regard to the prohibition of torture, the protection of the right to life, and the prevention of enforced disappearance.
