The Killing of Civilian Marwa al-Rai and the Injury of Her Husband and Daughter in an Armed Attack in Homs Amid Rising Sectarian-Based Targeting of Civilians

Marwa al-Rai has died from severe injuries, and her husband, Salim Asaad, along with their four-year-old daughter, Lilas Asaad, sustained critical wounds following an armed attack targeting the family in front of their home in the Al-Muhajirin neighborhood of Homs, Central Syria. This incident falls within an escalating pattern of gross human rights violations suspected of having a sectarian character.

The incident occurred on the evening of April 6, 2026, when unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire using a silenced weapon at members of the family, who belong to the Alawite sect, while they were outside their residence near the Al-Thawra School in the Al-Muhajirin neighborhood.

The attack resulted in life-threatening injuries to the mother, Marwa al-Rai, her husband, and their child. They were transported to the Al-Zahra National Hospital in critical condition. Ms. al-Rai subsequently passed away despite medical efforts to save her life.

This incident coincides with a marked increase in violence against civilians across various regions of Syria, including extrajudicial killings and violations linked to religious and sectarian backgrounds.

On April 5, 2026: A young man, Arif Amin Zalkh, was found dead inside his vehicle in the Karm Shamsham neighborhood of Homs after being subjected to direct gunfire. The victim, a member of the Alawite sect, was originally from the village of Al-Mazhariyah in the southeastern Hama countryside. No confirmed information is available regarding the perpetrators.

On April 4, 2026: The home of Basel Mahmoud al-Mohammad (known as al-Akkari) in the village of Birin, western Hama countryside, was targeted in an armed assault. A hand grenade was thrown into his residence; as he attempted to move it away from his family, it detonated in his hand, followed by gunfire directed at him. He succumbed to his injuries on the morning of April 6, 2026. He was also of the Alawite sect.

On April 2, 2026: Two civilians, Mohammad Hafiz al-Ali and Youssef Mohammad al-Ali, both Alawites, were killed while working on agricultural land north of Al-Bayyad village, under the jurisdiction of the Umm al-Tuyour municipality in the western Hama countryside. There were no indications of their involvement in any combat activities.

On April 1, 2026: Fatir Ratib Hamdan, from the village of Al-Hadatha in the Homs countryside, died from injuries sustained due to torture during a detention period lasting approximately one year and two months. He passed away days after being released in critical health condition. The victim belonged to the Alawite sect.

Collectively, these facts indicate an alarming surge in gross human rights violations in Syria, encompassing extrajudicial killings, torture, and armed assaults against civilians. These incidents reflect a growing pattern of targeting individuals on religious and sectarian grounds, raising serious concerns regarding the expansion of systematic violence against minorities.

The persistence of these violations, in the absence of effective and transparent investigations, fosters a climate of impunity. It underscores the urgent need for independent inquiries, the accountability of those responsible for these crimes, and the guaranteed protection of civilians in accordance with the provisions of International Human Rights Law and International Humanitarian Law.
