Killing of the Child Lilas Salim Assad Due to Injuries Sustained Days After Her Mother’s Killing in an Armed Attack Suspected of Sectarian Motives in Homs City

The child Lilas Salim Assad (4 years old) died from severe injuries on April 12, 2026, five days after the killing of her mother, Marwa al-Raee, following an armed attack targeting the family in front of their home in the Al-Muhajirin neighborhood of Homs, central Syria, amid indicators of potential sectarian motives.

The incident occurred on the evening of April 6, 2026, when unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on members of a civilian family using a weapon equipped with a silencer while they were in front of their residence near the Al-Thawra School in the Al-Muhajirin neighborhood of Homs.

The attack resulted in serious injuries to Mrs. Marwa al-Raee, her husband Salim Assad, and their daughter Lilas Salim Assad (4 years old). They were transported to the Al-Zahra National Hospital, where their conditions were described at the time as critical.

Subsequently, Mrs. Marwa al-Raee passed away due to her injuries despite medical efforts to save her, while the condition of the child Lilas deteriorated until her death was announced on April 12, 2026. Her father, Salim Assad, remains among those injured in the attack.

The targeted family belongs to the Alawite sect, raising serious concerns that the crime may have a sectarian background, particularly in light of the increasing incidents of violence targeting civilians based on religious or sectarian affiliation in certain Syrian regions.

This incident falls within the context of escalating gross human rights violations in Syria, including extrajudicial killings and the targeting of civilians, amidst the ongoing conflict and deteriorating security conditions in several areas. Field data indicates a rise in patterns of violence suspected of being linked to sectarian or discriminatory backgrounds.

Legal Characterization and Implications
This occurrence constitutes a flagrant violation of the right to life guaranteed under international human rights law and may amount to an extrajudicial killing. The targeting of civilians, including children, is a clear breach of the provisions of International Humanitarian Law, which mandates special protection for civilians during conflicts.

This incident underscores the urgent necessity to:

Open independent and transparent investigations to identify those responsible for the attack.

Hold perpetrators accountable and ensure they do not enjoy impunity.

Take effective measures to protect civilians, particularly vulnerable groups such as children.

Work towards halting violations of a sectarian nature and strengthening the rule of law.

The persistence of such crimes in the absence of accountability fosters a climate of impunity and undermines efforts aimed at achieving justice and protecting human rights in Syria.
