The Death of Fayez Abdul Rahman Al-Shaykh Namis in the Prisons of the Temporary Authority in Damascus Following Detention Since April 2025

Fayez Abdul Rahman Al-Shaykh Namis, a prominent figure of the Al-Sada Al-Ashraf Al-Bu Salama tribe and a member of the Hasakah Council of Notables, has died within the prisons of the Temporary Authority in the Syrian capital, Damascus. This comes more than a year after his detention, along with his two sons, since April 2025, according to local sources.

According to available information, the Temporary Authority handed over the body of Sheikh Fayez Abdul Rahman Al-Shaykh Namis to his family on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, whereupon the body was transported to the city of Hasakah in northeastern Syria.

The death of Sheikh Namis within his place of detention has raised human rights questions and concerns regarding the conditions of his detention and the circumstances surrounding his death, particularly in light of reports that he was subjected to inhumane treatment during his period of detention, and in the absence of any official clarifications regarding the direct causes of death.

Sheikh Fayez Abdul Rahman Al-Shaykh Namis is considered a well-known social figure in the Hasakah Governorate, where he served as a member of the Hasakah Council of Notables and belonged to the Al-Sada Al-Ashraf Al-Bu Salama tribe.

This incident brings back to the forefront concerns related to detention conditions within the detention centers and prisons operated by the Temporary Authority, amid human rights demands for the launch of an independent and transparent investigation to uncover the circumstances of the death of Sheikh Fayez Abdul Rahman Al-Shaykh Namis, and to ensure accountability for those responsible for any potential human rights violations.
