Killing of medical staff as a result of the interim authority forces targeting “Khaled Fajr” Hospital in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood of Aleppo, northern Syria

A number of medical staff were killed and others sustained varying injuries as a result of the targeting of “Khaled Fajr” Hospital in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood of the city of Aleppo in northern Syria, on the evening of Friday, 9 January 2026, following heavy shelling carried out by the interim authority forces, “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham”.

According to available information, the health facility was subjected in the recent period to repeated attacks using artillery, mortar shells, and rockets, resulting in severe damage to the hospital’s departments. Documented footage showed flames rising and fires spreading inside the hospital building following the shelling.

In the same context, video footage dated 9 January 2026 from inside “Khaled Fajr” Hospital showed extremely dire humanitarian conditions, with wounded persons lying on the ground due to severe overcrowding and the medical staff’s inability to accommodate the increasing numbers of injured, following shelling that targeted the Kurdish neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo.

Information indicated that “Khaled Fajr” Hospital went completely out of service on 8 January 2026 as a result of repeated shelling that struck the building and led to the disruption of medical services. Footage captured on the same day also showed a direct targeting of the hospital as part of violent attacks that struck the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods.

In another incident related to the same context, the evening of Thursday, 8 January 2026, witnessed the killing of two workers in the health sector inside Othman Hospital in the Ashrafieh neighborhood of the city of Aleppo. According to available information, armed men affiliated with the interim authority forces, belonging to “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham”, stormed the hospital, where they bound the two victims and then summarily executed them by gunfire inside the medical facility during the early morning hours.

The two victims are Adnan Aref Othman, the brother of the director of Othman Hospital, and Ali Hanif Othman. They are from the village of Ain al-Hajar Saghir in the Afrin countryside. Both victims belong to the Kurdish component and were working as part of the hospital’s medical staff.

The information indicates that the heavy shelling that targeted the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods resulted in deaths and injuries in neighborhoods with a majority population from the Kurdish component. These incidents fall within the context of a military escalation that included the targeting of residential neighborhoods and medical facilities, leading to a serious deterioration of humanitarian conditions and the disruption of health services in the area.
