Syrian citizen Suliman Saleh Abshi, a native of the village of Al-Shuhaib in the Salamiyah countryside of Hama Governorate, was killed after being shot by masked gunmen on the road connecting the cities of Salamiyah and Al-Sabboura on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
According to available information, Abshi worked as a bus driver and belonged to the Alawite community. The incident occurred amidst a continuous security deterioration witnessed in several areas of the Hama countryside, and amid mounting fears of growing patterns of targeting based on sectarian backgrounds.
This crime falls within a broader context of chronologically close incidents that point to an alarming escalation in violence of a sectarian nature. This coincides with the spread of hate speech and incitement across digital platforms and media outlets, including statements and rhetoric issued by clerics and media figures close to the Temporary Authority, without effective measures being taken to limit the impact of such discourse on civil peace.
Recent recurring events demonstrate an increasing pattern of targeting civilians belonging to specific sectarian backgrounds, raising serious concerns regarding the exacerbation of societal tensions and the expansion of the circle of violations linked to identity and affiliation.
These developments also coincide with the ongoing state of security chaos and the weak effectiveness of law enforcement authorities, contributing to increased instability and deepening the fears of local residents regarding their safety and security. The proliferation of incitement and hate speech, particularly in the digital space, is a major factor in fueling these violations and reinforcing a climate of impunity.
The continuation of these violations without independent and transparent investigations or effective legal accountability poses a direct threat to civil peace and undermines the principles of justice and the rule of law. This necessitates urgent action from the relevant authorities to ensure the protection of civilians and prevent the escalation of the cycle of violence and violations based on sectarian backgrounds.
