Killing of Five Citizens from the Alawite Sect and the Recovery of Their Bodies Near the T-4 Airport in the Homs Countryside Amid Conflicting Narratives Regarding the Circumstances of the Incident

On July 3, 2026, local sources monitored the recovery of the bodies of five citizens belonging to the Alawite sect in the vicinity of the T-4 (Tiyas) Military Airport on the Homs–Palmyra road in the countryside of Homs Governorate. The incident has been surrounded by conflicting narratives regarding the causes of death and the entity responsible.

According to available information, the victims are:

Firas Ali Al-Rheed

Hassan Bassam Al-Rheed

Jaafar Muhammad Al-Rayyani

Ghadir Adnan Salameh

Muhammad Ali Salim

Sources also reported that the young man, Ali Al-Raad, remains missing as of the time of writing this report. According to circulating information, the victims hail from predominantly Alawite villages in the eastern countryside of Homs Governorate, including the Jabb al-Jarrah area and its surroundings.

The Homs Media Directorate stated that engineering units of the Syrian Arab Army discovered the bodies during a routine sweeping operation in the vicinity of the T-4 Airport. The directorate indicated that preliminary data suggests the victims died as a result of a landmine explosion after unlawfully entering the area surrounding the airport several days ago.

Conversely, local sources circulated an alternative narrative stating that the young men, who were day laborers, had departed about five days prior in a cargo truck with the purpose of transporting scrap metal from a warehouse in the vicinity of the city of Palmyra, after being assigned this task.

Other sources circulated an additional narrative claiming that the young men had headed to the T-4 Airport area with the objective of dismantling landmines, after being hired for this task by a commander within the Public Security Directorate in Homs Governorate, before subsequently falling into an ambush in the area, according to those sources.

In the same context, a video clip was circulated showing the bodies of the victims in a desert area. Based on a preliminary review of the footage, the external appearance of the bodies does not seem consistent with the hypothesis of death resulting from a landmine explosion. However, these observations cannot be adopted as conclusive evidence, nor can conclusions be drawn regarding the cause of death in the absence of a forensic investigation or an independent medical examiner’s report.

This incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing reports of violations targeting civilians in Syria, amid growing concerns over the recurrence of killings targeting members of religious and sectarian minorities, particularly individuals from the Alawite sect in the governorates of Homs and Hama, as well as Damascus.
