Jiwan Ahmed, a 21-year-old Kurdish youth originally from the city of Kobani (Ayn al-Arab) in northern Syria, has been missing since April 28, 2026. He disappeared under mysterious circumstances in the Homs Governorate while traveling toward the Syrian–Lebanese border with the intent to cross. As of the time of this report, there is no confirmed information regarding his fate, amid growing concerns from his family for his safety.
According to available information, Mr. Ahmed was en route to the Syrian–Lebanese border to leave the country, driven by the arduous security and living conditions in northern Syria. Communication with him was abruptly severed while he was in Homs, with no evidence currently available regarding his whereabouts or the entity that may be responsible for his disappearance.
This incident occurs within a concerning escalation of enforced disappearances targeting civilians in Syria, particularly Kurdish youth, while traveling along roads and through border regions. Local testimonies indicate that this demographic faces multiple risks, including arbitrary detention at security checkpoints or falling victim to human trafficking and smuggling networks.
This disappearance coincides with the ongoing siege and humanitarian deterioration in Kobani. The dire economic and security conditions are forcing many residents, particularly the youth, to attempt to leave the country via irregular routes in pursuit of reaching European nations. However, these routes frequently expose them to grave dangers, including exploitation, kidnapping, and extortion.
Kurdish-majority areas in northern Syria, most notably Kobani, have witnessed an increase in the frequency of violations since the beginning of the year. Reports indicate a siege imposed on the city by factions affiliated with the so-called “Syrian Interim Authority,” occurring alongside military operations and acts of looting and pillaging in several rural villages following the forced displacement of their inhabitants.
Human rights activists maintain that the continued siege and humanitarian decline drive civilians to make high-risk decisions, such as resorting to smuggling routes. This significantly increases their vulnerability to gross violations, including enforced disappearance and human trafficking.
This incident underscores the urgent need to ensure civilian protection, disclose the fate of the missing, and hold the parties responsible for these violations accountable, especially given the prevailing climate of impunity that encourages the recurrence of such crimes.
