Footage circulated on social media platforms during June 14, 2026, has shown alarming indicators of escalating security chaos in the towns of Kafr Takharim and Kafr Owayd in the countryside of Idlib, northern Syria. This comes amid reports of killings and liquidations targeting civilians in public spaces, following incitement and treason campaigns published on social media platforms that labeled some of the targeted individuals as loyalists to the former Syrian regime, or what is locally known as “Shabiha”.
According to available information, assaults and killings took place in public squares and roads, targeting individuals accused of loyalty to the former Syrian regime president, Bashar al-Assad, without any reference to judicial rulings or legal proceedings issued against them. Circulated data indicates that the victims included elderly men, and some incidents were carried out in front of the victims’ family members, including children.
Furthermore, footage circulated on social media platforms showed a man bearing signs of injuries and blood, while local activists reported that the individual subsequently succumbed to his injuries as a result of torture.
In a related context, local reports indicated that similar incidents occurred in other areas, where individuals described as “Shabiha” were targeted following online incitement campaigns. These incidents have raised growing concerns regarding the proliferation of acts of revenge and extrajudicial violence, amid accusations of the security apparatuses’ inability to prevent these violations or hold the perpetrators accountable.
Additionally, posts were circulated in the Latakia Governorate containing threats directed at individuals described as “Shabiha”, calling on them to leave their areas. This raises further concerns about the escalation of hate speech and incitement, and the consequent human rights violations that may result from it.
The Rights Monitor Syria platform warns that the continuation of these practices could exacerbate societal tensions and widen the cycle of violence and revenge, thereby threatening civil peace and undermining the rule of law.
The principles of international human rights law affirm that the right to life and a fair trial are fundamental rights that must be guaranteed to all persons without discrimination, and that extrajudicial killings or collective reprisal constitute gross violations that warrant investigation and accountability, regardless of the political affiliations or accusations leveled against the victims.
