The “Strike of Dignity” in the Syrian coast entered its third day on December 10, 2025, amid continued adherence by residents belonging to the Alawite community in a number of cities and towns in the region. The strike comes in response to a call by the head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the Diaspora, Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, who announced a general strike for five days, from December 8 to 12, 2025.
Most of the participants in the strike are members of the Alawite community residing in the cities and towns of the Syrian coast, in addition to gatherings in the areas of Masyaf, Suqaylabiyah, and al-Ghab in western Hama countryside, as well as some neighborhoods of Homs city. This civil action comes amid rising crimes and violations targeting members of the Alawite community.
Circulated photos and statements from local activists since the start of the strike have shown an almost complete paralysis in Latakia, Tartus, Jableh, Baniyas, and al-Qardaha, in addition to other villages and towns in the Syrian coast. The strike also included areas in the western countryside of Hama and neighborhoods in Homs city, where residents remained in their homes and commercial shops closed their doors. The first day of the strike, on December 8, witnessed a widespread display of these scenes in the cities of Latakia, Tartus, Jableh, and Safita, in addition to towns in Hama countryside and some neighborhoods in Homs.
Local activists reported that the security forces of the interim authority, “Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham,” threatened employees participating in the strike with dismissal from their jobs and issued warnings to shop owners of imposing penalties on them if they continued to keep their stores closed. These threats constitute coercive behavior that restricts freedom of assembly and expression and impose direct pressure on residents to prevent them from engaging in peaceful civil protest.
Thus, the “Strike of Dignity” enters its third day amid continued wide participation by residents, alongside escalating security pressure from the interim authority, within a tense political and social context witnessed in the Syrian coast since November 25, 2025.
