Rights Monitor Syria has documented a video clip showing the arrest and physical assault of a citizen, along with the hurling of sectarian slurs and insults targeting the beliefs of the Shia sect, at the hands of members of the Syrian security forces. This coincided with the execution of demolition operations targeting civilian homes in the village of Al-Mazra’ah, west of the city of Homs.
According to local sources, this incident occurred within the context of a demolition campaign initiated by machinery belonging to the Homs Governorate, backed by security forces, since the morning of June 29, 2026, in the predominantly Shia village of Al-Mazra’ah, following the cutting off of water and electricity services to the village.
According to local testimonies, the demolition operations were accompanied by strict security measures, which included threats and insults directed at some residents, as well as a ban on documenting the demolitions through photography. Sources also reported that a delegation of village residents headed to the Homs Governorate building to demand a halt to these measures; however, the governor appointed by the temporary authority refused to receive the delegation or listen to their demands, according to those testimonies.
In a related context, the platform monitored the circulation of posts on social media networks containing inflammatory statements and hate speech targeting members of the Shia sect. These included calls glorifying the demolition of the village and urging the eradication of its traces, which raises concerns over the escalation of hate speech and incitement based on religious or sectarian affiliation, in violation of international human rights standards.
Circulating local testimonies and stances indicate that the current measures may constitute an extension of a pattern of displacement targeting residents on the basis of their religious or sectarian affiliation.
On the other hand, another circulating narrative indicates that the targeted real estate properties are located within an area legally classified as informal/unauthorized housing, and that the demolition campaign is being implemented within the framework of removing building violations.
Furthermore, the Homs City Council clarified that the targeted area is located on expropriated land owned by the Public Housing Establishment, and that the structures erected on it constitute building violations under the law.
Rights Monitor Syria emphasizes that international human rights standards obligate authorities to ensure respect for legal safeguards in all eviction or housing demolition operations, including prior notification, access to avenues of appeal, consultation with affected individuals, non-discrimination, and the provision of adequate alternative housing when necessary. It also stresses the necessity of conducting an independent investigation into allegations of assaults against citizens, the use of force, and violations of a sectarian nature, and ensuring the accountability of those responsible, so as to guarantee civilian protection and prevent impunity.
