Killing of Christian Citizen Bassem Salim in Jaramana Under Mysterious Circumstances Days After the Assassination of a Druze Physician

Mr. Bassem Salim Saadeh was found murdered in his home on the morning of April 20, 2026, in the city of Jaramana, Damascus Countryside, under circumstances that remain mysterious as of the time this report was prepared. This incident comes only three days after the killing of the young dentist, Anas Hossam Ballan, in the same area, raising growing concerns regarding the safety of civilians in the city.

According to available information, the victim, Bassem Salim Saadeh, was a Syrian civilian of the Christian faith and the owner of the “Al-Yasmine” restaurant in the Bab Touma area of Damascus. He hailed from the village of Marmarita, located in the Valley of the Christians (Wadi al-Nasara) in the western Homs countryside. He was found murdered inside his home in Jaramana, with no official information available yet regarding the circumstances of the crime or the party responsible for it.

This crime follows a killing incident that occurred on the morning of Friday, April 17, 2026, which claimed the life of the young dentist, Anas Hossam Ballan, a member of the Druze community, after he was subjected to gunfire approximately 300 meters from his home in Jaramana. According to reports, the crime took place about three hours before his scheduled travel to the United Arab Emirates.

The two incidents raise serious questions regarding the nature of these crimes—whether they are purely criminal in motive or involve sectarian dimensions, particularly given the targeting of two individuals from different religious backgrounds within a short timeframe and in the same area. These occurrences also reflect a disturbing deterioration in the level of security, especially in areas characterized by religious and sectarian diversity.

From a human rights perspective, these crimes represent a grave violation of the right to life, a fundamental right guaranteed under international human rights law, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. They also point to a continued state of impunity for crimes targeting civilians, in the absence of effective mechanisms for accountability and justice.

These incidents underscore the urgent need to open an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation to uncover the circumstances of both crimes, identify those responsible, and ensure they are brought to justice in accordance with international standards. They also highlight the necessity of taking urgent measures to enhance the protection of civilians without discrimination and to ensure their security in all areas.

The continued occurrence of such violations without accountability is likely to deepen the state of mistrust, threaten civil peace, and send dangerous signals regarding the decline in the value placed on protecting civilian lives, particularly those belonging to the most vulnerable groups.
