The Arrest of Syrian Actor Maan Abd al-Haq in Damascus Raises Concerns Regarding Freedom of Opinion and Expression

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Syrian Interim Authorities arrested Syrian actor Maan Abd al-Haq in the capital, Damascus, in a move that has sparked legal questions and human rights concerns regarding the freedom of opinion and expression.

Maan Abd al-Haq is known for his previous positions in support of the former Syrian regime (Bashar al-Assad). Despite these stances, his arrest—if exclusively linked to the expression of his views—falls under the scope of freedom of opinion and expression, which are rights guaranteed under international human rights standards.

Any legal proceedings against individuals based on their opinions must be subject to clear regulations that ensure fundamental rights are not violated. Should it be proven that Maan Abd al-Haq’s statements included hate speech, incitement to violence, or discrimination on sectarian or ethnic grounds, the authorities must bring him to a fair trial, ensuring all rights of defense and providing humane conditions of detention that comply with international standards.

However, in the absence of clear and specific charges against him, his continued detention constitutes a violation of his fundamental rights, necessitating his immediate release.

It is noted that Maan Abd al-Haq is a prominent Syrian actor who has participated in numerous Syrian dramatic works over the years, making him a well-known public figure.
