The Killing of Two Young Men, Majd Hatem Al-Shaer and Yamen Hussein Al-Suleiman, in an Armed Attack in the Eastern Countryside of Hama, Amid Concerns Over the Escalating Targeting of Members of the Alawite Community

The two young men, Majd Hatem Al-Shaer and Yamen Hussein Al-Suleiman, members of the Alawite community, were killed following an armed attack carried out by unidentified perpetrators on the evening of June 1, 2026, in the village of Kitlon, located in the countryside of Salamiyah city within the eastern countryside of Hama.

According to available information, gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire directly at the two young men while they were inside a commercial shop owned by the victim, Majd Hatem Al-Shaer, in the center of the village, resulting in their immediate death.

This incident occurs within the context of escalating incitement campaigns and hate speech directed against members of the Alawite community in several Syrian regions, including the Hama countryside. This raises serious concerns regarding the rise of patterns of violence and targeting based on sectarian affiliation.

Furthermore, the escalation of hate speech and incitement across digital platforms contributes to fueling societal tensions and increasing the likelihood of retaliatory acts of violence, amidst the absence of effective measures to curb such discourse or to hold those responsible accountable.

This incident heightens growing concerns regarding the rise of violations related to the right to life and personal security, particularly against members of minorities, in light of the ongoing security vacuum and the absence of effective accountability mechanisms, in addition to the weakness of measures ensuring the protection of civilians in areas under the control of the temporary authority.

This incident underscores the urgent need for an independent and transparent investigation into its circumstances, the revelation of the identity of the perpetrators and the entities responsible for it, and ensuring they are held accountable in accordance with due legal standards and in alignment with international human rights law obligations. It also highlights the importance of taking effective measures to prevent incitement to hatred and violence, and to enhance the protection of civilians from violations based on religious or sectarian affiliation.
